Welcome! I am also a former d2 player but found this game very enjoyable. One of the first builds i made was a Monk. Easy to play with and you don't need godly gear to be effective in missions. I went healing since you can will ALWAYS find a group for missions that way. They are very and VERY effective. Plus you can just quest with henchies and you will be fine.

i would reccomend warrior for your first character. its probably the best class to start the game out with. monks are actually pretty cool too tho!

The best resource I've found (besides talking on this board) has to be www.guildwiki.org

Eh, there is an... effluence of warriors these days. Maybe a mesmer, those are quite rare. Unfortunately they're also not very good in pve.
Basically choose whatever you want, and just get acquainted with the game. As long as it isn't a w/mo, you should learn plenty. My first character was a necromance (i loved necromancers in d2) who went /monk to heal his minions, but that didn't work out, and he's still around, but I used the awesome ability of secondary-calss changing that is given to you in the middle of the storyline. So i'd go with the main class to be whatever you liked best in d2 (barbarian=warrior, amazon=ranger, necro=necro or mesmer, paladin=warrior or smiting monk, etc) or go with monk or mesmer if you want to try something new.

What class depends on your own stlye of playing,if u are the type who love to heal and feel good when ur teamates live at the end of a huge battle, then thats ur choice.
If you are the ones who love to be in the front of a battle to do melee and love heavy armour, instead of at the back casting spells, than choose a warrior.(but of course,u will deal lesser damage than any other classes, but u can take lots more damage than other classes. =) best warrior to start off is a Warrior/monk,as u can heal urself while taking damage.
I would recommend you to buy the Guild wars guild book as there is hella lots of good information for a newbie, also, for a veteran player in the game,u will be needing it,when u start the game, till you finshes it.

I think you picked the wrong game....
ps
here's the skill list if you haven't seen it.
check it out and see what you like.
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/skill.php
also, bear in mind the various armors that different classes use --- I think it's fairly traditional.
just remember that your character will have 2 classes, w/the primary determining what special attribute you use and what armor you wear.
so, just as example, if you're warrior/elementalist you'd have good armor, but your mana/energy pool would suck and the regen would be low.
but, if you picked elementalist/warrior your armor would suck and your mana/energy would be great.
as you run around the beginning of the game (presear) you'll get various quests for the secondary classes which let you temporarily try out various different skills --- although, that's really a pretty tiny taste.
once you pick a second class and finish presear (the area you start in), some guy will ask if you're ready to move on (can never go back) and you'll begin the main game (postsear).
and if you hadn't noticed, you can have 4 characters per account.

I have a geforce 4mx from any years ago and it works fine. Maybe it's worth spending $50 on a new card.
